The Berkeley Pit
Operating from 1955 to 1982, Berkeley Pit is a reminder of the impact mining can have on the environment. The pit is 1 mile long by half a mile wide and 1,800 feed deep. Millions of gallons of water continue to flow into the pit causing it to deepen further. During its heyday, approximately 290 million tons of copper was removed from the mine.
